Camera Feature Guide

Motion Detection - Some cameras are smart enough to only start recording when they detect motion infront of them. This has the benefit of saving battery since they can power down when no detection is found. Typically, these cameras save the recordings with a time and date for you to review later. Other cameras provide a live feed, but are constantly on.

Push Notifications - Most cameras with motion detectors will be able to notify you when they detect motion. Typically this is in the form of a push notification to your mobile phone (if you use their app).

Bird Identification - Finally the top of the range cameras are smart enough to not only detect motion, but to tell you which bird you are looking at. Isn't technology wonderful!

Top Bird Feeding Cameras for Birds

In the last few years we've seen some fantastic innovations in bird feeding, proibably the most exciting of them all being the inclusion of cameras in bird feeders. These cameras come in many different forms and some can even tell you which birds are feeding on your feeder at any time.

Not only will you never miss a bird, but you can keep tabs on which birds are coming to your feeders. Want to see more woodpeckers? Keep an eye on things and you can then adjust your bird feeder locations and the type of food you're feeding to attract more birds.

Bird Buddy vs NetVue

The Bird Buddy takes photos and videos of birds as they appear, but not every bird will be captured. Probably the nicest feature of the Bird Buddy is that every bird it see's is saved to a collection and newe birds expand your collection as they appear - pretty cool!

Photos are taken at 5 megapixels and videos at 720p. Whilst those are nowhere near the quality a modern smartphone will produce (typically 16 megapixels and 4k video), the subject is up close to the camera so the results are usually pretty decent.

The NetVue AI Camera is great in that iut takes photos of everything that appears infront of the camera, incl;duing squirrels. Whilst that might not be to everyones taste, we found it really useful and actually changed what we were feeding the birds to discourage the squirrels.

The NetVue also attempts to identify birds, but it isn't quite as accurate as the Bird Buddy. With this sort of thing, it tends to improve over time, so we unles this is an absolute must for you, we wouldn't hold it against them.

Although the Bird Buddy is (at least on paper) technically better, it's somewhat hard to get hold of and only available direct from Bird Buddy which means a £30 delivery fee to the UK. Depending on what you're after, we recommend going for the slightly cheaper and easier to get hold of NetVue, it just makes sense financially 👍.

Notes

The green feathers camera requires more setup and is less user friendly than other cameras. But we've included it as it's decent kit and works quiote well.

The Wasserstein camera doesn't include a camera, but you can fit several different waterproof cameras in the feeder, which all come with apps. e.g. the excellent Ring camera. The benefit of this is you can use an existing camera or keep the cost down. You aren't going to get the AI smarts of other cameras though. Hence our rating above assumes you're using it with a blink camera.

The Cozion camera is a hybrid between the Netvue and Green Feathers. It won't work with an app, but it does come with 32gb of storage which you can then connect to your PC via USB to look at the videos. It's a little old fashioned in its approach these days, but it's also much, much more wallet friendly!
